freedom is a privilege

on the weekend me and hannah went to the cinema and we watched "django unchained".
it's not exactly a feel good movie but definitely one that stays with you for a while. quentin tarantino is unsparing in his display of violence and atrocity that was exerted by white people during the period of slavery in america. but his peculiar wit and storytelling make it bearable. it is really thought provoking and illustrates very clearly how wrong slavery and also discrimination is.
it certainly is a movie worth watching.

here is the trailer:

the soundtrack is really good too.

the wonders of the internet

often i think that it would be nicer to live in a age where people don't write e-mails and facebook messages but hand-written letters and would listen to cds and vinyls they bought because they really love the music rather than download anything without thinking twice. and children would play hide and seek rather than world of warcraft...
but yeah, the internet is not only an incredible resource of endless information about everything it also has it's magical moments.
last weekend i "attended" an online concert by mia rose. she became famous through youtube (her youtube channel is the first i ever subscribed to - probably 5 years ago) and on sunday she gave a concert on "stage it" (live from her room!) for an international audience - and i absolutely loved it.

here a little taste of her loveliness:

happy tuesday everyone!

highly recommended

okay, this weekend i totally fell in love with josh radnor.
or at least with his work.
i watched "happythankyoumoreplease", which is just this really calm, unexaggerated, beautiful and honest movie.
here's the trailer.

and the next day i took on "liberal arts", which just captured and expressed so many things i feel and think and wonder about. and it has people in it who love to read. might be a new favourite. i can really recommend it. but don't watch the trailer - it does not do the film justice.

all right. happy weekend to y'all.

a love-hate relationship

like raindrops
that fall heavily, slowly
on a hot and sticky summer day
it refreshes and desiccates
quietly, tardy.
suddenly i open my eyes
and the world has changed
all the confusion, all the pragmatism,
cynicism and resignation
blur, get out of focus.
and i can feel it all again
the beauty of this world
that is so unstable,
that runs through your fingers like sand
and i understand the importance
and i grasp the inspiration
and so just in time
i was reconciled
with the liberal arts
even though i still sometimes wish
to live and work
closer to reality.

a little late but: happy new year

people often talk about how overrated new year's eve is, that people have to high expectations, and think that everything is gonna change even though nothing does. they say that life will just go on as always.
i agree, it is quite unlikely that on the night of the 31st of december something magical will happen and as the clock turns twelve we all suddenly are new people. nothing changes just like that.
things change, things happen because people make decisions. all our actions have consequences, what we choose to say, to do or to think shapes our character, shapes our relationships and the people around us, our family and friends, neighbours, colleagues, strangers.
i think the beginning of a new year is a good time to reflect, what decisions we made in the last year and what we can learn from that. we can consider how we want to grow throughout the next year, and how we can encourage, challenge and support our nearest and dearest.
so, 2013 is not necessarily a new beginning - but it can be.
