Tuesday Tunes | Wir sind Helden

wir sind helden has been one of my favourite bands for many years. i saw them live for the first time when i was 13 and have loved them ever since. judith holofernes, the singer writes extremely intelligent, funny and thoughtful lyrics.
this song i am sharing today only started to appeal to me recently. i have been feeling quite homesick and a bit lost and the words of this song (it is titled 'bring me home') perfectly capture those feelings.

happy tuesday.

Tuesday Tunes | James Bay

after some time of absence (writer's block is a thing apparently) i am back with some music i have been listening too lately. i know that james bay is by no means a new discovery but i am finally jumping on the bandwagon!
as i have written about, i ran a half marathon on the first of november and james bay's album chaos and the calm was a great companion throughout my training sessions.
it is difficult to pick just one song so here is two of my favourites:

i find it deeply inspiring how much emotion, how much sound and melody this guy can create with just his voice and a guitar.
hopefully you all have a lovely tuesday!

Tuesday Tunes | Stornoway

exactly one week ago it was my birthday and i had the most wonderful day. started by a run along the canal and the first song i listened to was this. this song oozes so much happiness and it was the perfect beginning to the day and a good motivation for the rest of the week where i did a lot of studying accompanied by many many cups of coffee.

i listen to this song again today as it is my exam day and i hope that i will describe it as perfect also! wish me luck :)

Tuesday Tunes | Matt Simons

                                                             we remember moments.

Tuesday Tunes I Tommy Emmanuel

in june i spent a bit of time back home in germany. one really hot sunday my dad, a good friend of ours and i drove to freiburg to a music festival to see the world's best guitarist (according to eric clapton): tommy emmanuel.

and i have to say eric clapton did not exaggerate - it was the best concert i have ever been to. despite being sat in a tent in 38° degrees heat the music was so mesmerising that i completely forgot about how much i was sweating. tommy emmanuel is not only incredibly skilled, he has a way of playing that just takes you to different worlds and made me soul soar.

if you ever have the chance to see this guy live - do it.

thursday tunes

it's thursday and i thought it is time to share some music i have been listening to lately. music makes life so much more bearable even though it is cold and grey.
i adore this song - it sounds like spring and happiness.

these last days and weeks were good but full of hard decisions and marred by post-christmas blues.

however, at the moment i am drinking tea and eating cake with my beatiful friend beth and life is good.

i hope everyone is having a good week and enjoying the little joys of life.

hello and happy 2014

a little late but happy 2014 everyone! i hope the year started well for you and will hold many good things, inspirations and intellectual challenges.

2014 is going to be exciting for me - i will finish my bachelors degree, will start to work for my church and hopefully start doing a masters.

as all my creative energy flows into my dissertation at the moment i will just leave you with some of my latest inspiration:
a beautiful song (my friend simone and i may or may not have started our day of studying by learning it on the guitar...) and a quote from my favourite book the fault in our stars by john green.

some words and some music

"i actually attack the concept of happiness. i don't mind people being happy - but the idea that everything we do is part of the pursuit of happiness seems to me a really dangerous notion and has led to a contemprary disease in western society, which is fear of sadness.
it's a really odd thing that we're now seeing people saying 'write down three things that made you happy today before you go to sleep', and so on. we're kind of teaching our kids that happiness is the default position - it's rubbish.
wholeness is what we ought to be strieving for and part of that is sadness, disappointment, frustration, failure; all of those things which make us who we are.
happiness and victory and fulfillment are nice little things that also happen to us, but they don't teach us much. everyone says we grow throught pain and then as soon as they experiecne pain they say 'quick! move on! cheer up!"
i'd like just for a year to have a moratorium on he word 'happiness' and to replace it with the word 'wholeness'. ask yourself 'is this contributing to my wholeness?' and if you're having a bad day, it is." -hugh mackay

i am not quite sure if i have posted this quote before, but whenever i'm having a bad day, i remind myself of this and it helps me to see a situation from a different perspective.

but also, when all else fails, there is always this song:

happy wholesome weekend, friends.

aaah music

just one week into term but i am already swamped with work. but so far it all has been quite fun.
i love being back at lancaster and seeing all the friends i missed so dearly over the summer and especially being back at my beautiful church.
i don't have much else to share at the moment but i spend some time listening to tv noir concerts last night and re-discovered this beautiful singer. enjoy!

perfect sunday morning

drinking coffee, listening to john mayer and reading the best book ever written.

yes lord, walking in the ways of your laws,
we wait for you;
your name and renown
are the desire of our hearts.
my soul yearns for you in the night;
in the morning my spirit longs for you.
                                               -the bible, isaiah 26:8+9

future and flamenco

i saw this band about a week ago. the ticket was an early birthday gift my dad gave me.

and as i sat there - being immersed and bewitched by the sounds that were surrounding me - it suddenly clicked.

in this moment it all made sense. suddenly i knew that finding one's way isn't so much about defining the final destination - but more about figuring out the next step - and than the next and then the next. going through doors and doors and doors - without really knowing what is behind.

but every step, every space after every door - in itself is important and full of meaning.

there it was. all the loose ends in my head came together. and i knew what i needed to do.
and i sighed  - with relief and gratitude.

and i realised - that the authour of the most beautiful, magical and most expressive language of all - music -is also the authour of my life. and this excites me beyond words.

tuesday tunes.... another round.

i've been enjoying the warmth (heat) and the (mostly) consistent good weather back home in germany.
but today the sun wasn't shining. the sky was black and the evening brought heavy rain.
a perfect day for a cuppa and some amazingly beautiful music.
oh those marvellous voices and this delicate english accent.
i'm swooning.

tuesday tunes

every day we should hear at least one little song, read one good poem, see one exquisite picture, and, if possible, speak a few sensible words.             -goethe

here is one little song.

it makes me ridiculously happy and gives me this feeling of being excited and full of anticipation. for future projects. for the summer. for freedom.

i hope you all have a great day filled with poetry, art and sensible, encouraging words.
